Participants will receive 12 hours of training split into easily manageable two-hour sessions each week. These classes that will build your skills and confidence, empowering you to effectively advocate for your children in all aspects of life. Each series includes an in-depth look at special education, healthcare, insurance, community resources, and so much more!

AKtion Club - Fun With a Purpose!

 

My name is David and I like to help people. I also like to get out and about in the community. Being a member of AKtion Club allows me to do both!

 

I would like to invite you to check out Rocky Mountain Partners AKtion Club, which meets in Lakewood every first and third Wednesday from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Our club started seventeen years ago, in 2000, and I was the very first president. Over the years, we have helped all kinds of people who really needed it, and that makes me feel proud.

Colorado families who have a child with a disability and directors of special education, principals, special education teachers, general education teachers, related service providers, health care and other Colorado professionals interested in the family and school partnership who work with children or youth with disabilities are invited to attend the 2017-2018 Parents Encouraging Parents Conferences!

 

PEP Conferences are designed to promote family and school partnerships that are essential in supporting students with disabilities and their families in schools and the community. PEP brings families and professionals together by sharing ideas, discussing concerns, celebrating successes and obtaining information related to parenting, educating and partnering to support student learning. PEP is a non-specific disability conference that focuses on commonalities. PEP Conferences are offered at no cost to attendees.

 

PEP is held from 5 PM Thursday through 3 PM Saturday. The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Exceptional Student Services Unit (ESSU) pays for lodging and participant meals – excluding Friday night’s dinner. In order to enable more families and professionals to participate, PEP Conferences are scheduled throughout Colorado.

Free Caregiver Self-Care Classes

 

Are you caring for a loved one? Are you feeling stressed or burned out? You're invited to join Colorado Respite Coalition and Easter Seals for a free Caregiver Self-Care Class. Caregiving is a huge job that doesn’t come with training, and while there are many benefits from caregiving, there are challenges as well. This class will help caregivers learn techniques to help cope with the rewarding but often overwhelming job of caring for a loved one.  The class will use writing and other creative techniques to provide tools for effective self-care.

A Special Webinar With The Author of "Falling Off The Cliff"

 

Recently the Philadelphia Inquirer and its partners Daily News and Philly.com printed a four-part series titled "Falling Off the Cliff" , addressing the crisis that children with disabilities who are aging into adulthood and their families are facing, and how the crisis will impact us all.

 

Ronnie Polaneczky, columnist with the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer and the author of the four part series, will be hosting a webinar on January 4 at 12 PM about adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families. Ms. Polaneczky will be joined by Nick Smith, a direct support professional who works at SPIN in Philadelphia and was prominently featured in the article. Nick will discuss the significance of his work in supporting dignified lives for people in their community and how direct support professionals can become more active in meaningful policy discussions for change.

Act Quickly to Take Advantage of Charitable Rollover

 

As 2017 comes to a close supporters of The Arc have the opportunity to become members of our Changemaker Society by leaving a lasting legacy of social change for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Becoming a Changemaker can be as simple making a direct charitable distribution from your IRA, naming The Arc in your will, trust, or beneficiary designation.  

 

Did you know that charitable Rollovers include Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Rollovers too? This legislation, originally enacted in 2006, encourages IRA owners age 70-1/2 or older to donate to charities by allowing them to exclude up to $100,000 a year from income if the IRA funds are paid directly to charity.
