April Arnold, ACI Executive Director
As we close the 2025–2026 academic year, this newsletter issue reflects both the momentum we’ve built together and the responsibility we share to carry it forward. Across our member campuses and partner communities, one theme is clear: when we align education, industry, and student support with intention, opportunity follows.

That energy was unmistakable at ACI’s 2026 Breakfast Forum, Partners in Progress: Connecting Institutions and Industry for Impact. Leaders from higher education, philanthropy, healthcare, and business came together for thoughtful dialogue and action‑oriented collaboration. Michael Fassnacht’s call to “build talent to build cities” underscored what we see across Illinois every day: investing in students is foundational to strong institutions, resilient communities, and regional growth. The Forum’s conversations demonstrated what’s possible when partnership moves from idea to action.

This spirit of connection also resonates in the student stories featured throughout this issue. From Maya’s journey toward confidence and purpose to Rockford University’s Men of Confidence Mentoring program, these narratives remind us that belonging, mentorship, and encouragement are often the catalysts that help students persist and thrive the most.

Looking ahead, ACI remains focused on preparing students not just for graduation, but for a rapidly changing workforce. In upcoming sessions with IBM SkillsBuild and DeVry University’s DeVryPro, we help move conversations from AI awareness to AI fluency, to equip students with the skills, confidence, and adaptability employers seek.

We also share updates from our Board of Trustees, new leadership appointments, national engagement, and moments of transition, including honoring the meaningful legacy of Trinity Christian College.

As summer begins, I extend my gratitude for your partnership and wish you peaceful, restorative, and productive months ahead. Together, we continue strengthening pathways to opportunity and reaffirm why college matters.

Best,
April Arnold, CFRE

Event Recap: 2026 ACI Breakfast Forum

The energy at ACI’s 2026 Breakfast Forum was unmistakable. Under this year’s theme, Partners in Progress: Connecting Institutions and Industry for Impact, leaders from across sectors came together for a morning of thoughtful dialogue, shared learning, and action-oriented collaboration.

Keynote speaker Michael Fassnacht, Chief Growth Officer and President of Chicagoland for Clayco, set the tone with a powerful message: investing in talent is fundamental to building strong cities. His address, “Build Talent. Build Cities. A Guide to Our Joint Future,” called for deeper, more intentional partnerships that align education, workforce development, and regional growth.

That call was reinforced during a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Toby Eveland of Manley Burke LPA. Panelists Amy Cisneros (Braven), Eva Giglio (CME Group Foundation), and Erin Cohan (Northwestern Medicine) shared perspectives from higher education, philanthropy, and industry, highlighting how sustained collaboration, trust, and shared goals create meaningful career pathways for students and strong talent pipelines for employers.

Conversations continued at tables throughout the room, where attendees discussed what’s working, what needs to change, and how to move forward. Key takeaways included the importance of engaging employers earlier in the student journey, leveraging alumni networks, and maintaining consistent dialogue beyond formal events.

The Forum’s impact extended beyond conversation. The event raised $51,000 in net proceeds, including nearly $10,000 in additional donations, to support scholarships and professional development opportunities for students across ACI member institutions.

As the morning concluded, it was clear that the Forum’s value extends well beyond one event. Through continued partnership and collaboration, ACI is helping turn shared ideas into lasting impact: strengthening communities, shaping futures, and, as Fassnacht so powerfully framed it, helping build the cities we all share.

The Forum was made possible through generous support from our sponsors and partners, whose contributions are instrumental in advancing ACI's mission.

ACI Offers AI Solutions for All

Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) is helping member schools move from AI awareness to practical implementation through a coordinated series of webinars and partner-led learning opportunities. Together, these offerings give campus leaders, faculty, and staff access to strategic guidance, workforce-focused learning models, and ready-to-use resources that support responsible AI adoption across teaching, learning, student success, and institutional operations.
  • ACI and CIC: AI Ready – Fourth Thursdays in partnership with The Council of Independent Colleges is helping institutions build campus-wide AI readiness through a structured year-long series focused on key higher education topics such as enrollment, pedagogy, student success, and administration. ACI’s role is to connect Illinois member schools to this national framework and extend the learning through its Illinois-focused discussions, where campus leaders can reflect on lessons, share examples, and explore practical next steps together.
  • Tuesday, May 12:Learn About IBM AI SkillsBuild for Your Campus.  This webinar introduces member schools to free AI learning opportunities, credentials, and events offered through IBM SkillsBuild. It aims to help academic leaders understand how these resources can support faculty, staff, and students in developing AI literacy and workforce-relevant skills. The webinar will also demonstrate how a broad approach using badges and training can be implemented across the entire campus community.
  • Tuesday May 19: Building the AI Ready Campus.  ACI and DeVryPro are teaming up to prepare students for an AI-driven workforce. This session will focus on a practical, ready-to-use model that helps institutions quickly and affordably introduce AI learning. ACI’s role is to provide member schools with a partner solution that supports hands-on, workforce-aligned instruction, flexible course delivery, and scalable implementation. This collaboration aims to simplify the expansion of AI learning on campuses without the need for institutions to develop every component internally.
These partnerships create multiple entry points for institutions to strengthen AI fluency, explore scalable solutions, and prepare ACI member schools for an AI-driven future.  For more information, contact Leslie Scarpace at lscarpace@acifund.org

National Workshop Addresses Career Service Design

The Council of Independent Colleges convened national leaders for the Alliance for Strategic Innovation Career Services Design Workshop, held March 5–7, 2026, in Chicago and supported by the Lumina Foundation. Selected from a highly competitive pool, 29 teams came together to begin building a framework for a National Center for Careers and the Liberal Arts in an effort to strengthen how colleges connect education to career outcomes.

Representing Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) was President April Arnold, who shared the organization’s career-connected learning solutions for member schools. The workshop focused on developing scalable strategies that help institutions align academic experiences with workforce needs, ensuring students graduate with both a degree and a clear path forward.

ACI’s participation highlighted the impact of its partnerships with Braven, CareerSpring, and Parker Dewey, along with its own peer mentoring program to work with its member schools; these initiatives provide students with coaching, networks, and real-world experience. By participating in this national effort, ACI continues to expand opportunity and strengthen the bridge from college to career for students across its member institutions.

ACI Board Approves New Appointments, Budget, and Priorities for Coming Year

The ACI Board of Trustees convened on Friday, April 24, 2026, to review the past fiscal year and discuss plans for the upcoming year.

We kicked off the meeting with great reflections from Chloe Overstreet as a first-generation student who was supported by ACI through emergency financial aid and the ACI Peer Mentoring Program while she was a student at Eureka College. She is currently a judicial law clerk in Fairfax County (Va.) Circuit Court having gone to law school after graduating from college. We also recognized Chair Lyn Bulman’s nomination to receive the prestigious Charles W. L. Foreman Award from the Council of Independent Colleges. The award recognizes truly exceptional leadership in support of State Council advancement, and Lyn exemplifies these qualities in every aspect of her corporate and now volunteer service.

We approved the appointment of Lauren Groff, Principal of Sikich, as a new Corporate Trustee, along with the appointment of President Daniel Dobbins of McKendree University as Member-at-Large, replacing retiring president David Livingston of Lewis University on ACI’s Executive Committee. Corporate Trustee Kimberly Marshall will become ACI’s new Secretary/Treasurer, replacing Angela Allen in June. Congratulations to all, and thank you for your service!

The Board of Trustees conducted a review of ACI’s financial outlook and formally approved a conservative budget of approximately $1 million for the upcoming fiscal year. This budget reflects a slight change in the number of schools and includes a continued partnership with Braven to support member school students in the upcoming academic year, along with ACI’s own peer mentoring program.

We also discussed the dynamic environment we’re all living in right now, which is having an impact not only on higher education institutions, but on the fundraising landscape more broadly. We’re thinking about creative ways to continue to open doors to corporate funders, partner with like-minded organizations, and continue to raise ACI’s profile, especially in front of potential donors. If you have suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

In the year ahead, ACI will relocate its office due to the pending sale of the building now occupied, while maintaining service to member schools and program partnerships that reinforce a shared belief in why college matters.

Collectively, these efforts demonstrate ACI’s sustained focus on creating opportunities for and advancing student success across its member campuses.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 4:00- 5:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Reflecting on ACI’s mission, Stepno shared, “I believe that anyone who wants to go to college should be able to do so, not only financially, but with the support necessary to be successful in college and beyond.” She emphasized the importance of mentorship, noting her own experience mentoring students and her appreciation for ACI’s peer mentoring model. “Higher education is at a critical juncture, and ACI’s work is essential in ensuring that students, especially first-generation students, have both access and the tools to succeed.”

ACI Board Chair Recognized at  State Council's Annual Conference

Chicago was host to the Council of Independent Colleges’ 2026 State Council's Annual Conference, from April 28 to 30, 2026, held at the Royal Sonesta Chicago River North Hotel.

During the three-day program, participants explored current trends in independent higher education, discussed effective ways to support member presidents, and shared leadership strategies and opportunities. The conference also included sessions focused on using data to advocate for state associations and how AI is rewriting the student journey through enrollment with a strategic focus on “post-traditional” learners to bridge the demographic gap.

Attendees, including state executives, fundraising officers, and communication and operations staff, benefited from face-to-face networking opportunities and the exchange of best practices with colleagues. Additionally, participants had the chance to think creatively about the work of State Councils and their impact on independent higher education.

Lyn Bulman, Chair of the ACI Board, received the Charles W. L. Foreman Award from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) during the Opening Session on April 28. This prestigious award is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and a strong commitment to supporting state-based councils and independent higher education. It is regarded as the highest honor given by the CIC's State Councils, recognizing service that sets the recipient apart from their peers.

Drawing on her distinguished career in global human resources, Lyn has brought strategic vision, transparency, and a deep dedication to student success to ACI. She has guided the organization through a transformative period, enhancing its capacity to serve students throughout Illinois.

During her acceptance remarks, Bulman reflected both on the transformative power of education and the collective responsibility of those who support it, sharing, “I choose to volunteer with ACI because I have lived the change that education can bring.” She also reminded attendees of the broader impact of their work, noting, “Each individual change adds up, and by working together as a community, the world becomes a little bit better place.”

Her leadership has not only stabilized and advanced ACI’s mission but also reaffirmed a shared belief in expanding access to education and opportunity for those who need it most.

ACI in the Community

On May 5, President April Arnold was a guest of Forvis Mazars at the Chicago Article ImageWomen in Philanthropy Annual Luncheon, held at the Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile.  Each year, this signature event celebrates a woman whose leadership has made a powerful and lasting contribution to philanthropy.

In 1981, by Iris Krieg and Joy Beaton to strengthen philanthropy supporting women and girls, CWIP is now celebrating over 40 years of creating connections and fostering change to build better communities.

Forvis Mazars, a staunch supporter of ACI, was an Ally Sponsor whose support allows them to expand programs that empower women to confidently advocate for themselves and strengthen their communities. The luncheon also offers a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, forge new relationships, and celebrate the collective impact created together.

Dr. Christopher Sindt,  Lewis University's 11th President

Article Image
Lewis University has named Dr. Christopher Sindt as its 11th president, effective July 1, following a national search that emphasized mission-driven leadership and a strong vision for student success.

Having served as provost since 2018, Sindt has led efforts to strengthen academic programs, expand partnerships, and advance initiatives that support student persistence and institutional growth. His appointment reflects a continued commitment to aligning education with opportunity, particularly for those navigating financial or first-generation challenges, in reaching graduation and beyond. Under his leadership, Lewis has expanded access, enhanced innovation, and reinforced pathways that connect learning with real-world outcomes.

As ACI celebrates alongside the Lewis University community, Dr. Sindt’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter built on a strong foundation of student-centered leadership. This transition reflects not only continuity but a shared vision for expanding opportunity, strengthening academic excellence, and empowering students to thrive. We extend our congratulations to Dr. Sindt and the entire Lewis community as they continue advancing the success of their students and the impact of their institution.

Peer Mentoring in Action:  Rockford’s Men of Confidence
Article Image

At Rockford University, the Men of Confidence Mentorship (MCM) program continues to demonstrate how intentional peer support can shape not only student success but student identity. Rooted in the principles of belonging, accountability, and growth, the program reflects the lasting influence of Dr. Karen Walker, whose leadership helped transform mentoring into a powerful, student-centered experience.

Throughout the semester, MCM created opportunities for students to connect, reflect, and lead. “Chop It Up” sessions, led by peer mentors, offered honest conversations about navigating academic pressures, athletic commitments, and personal challenges. These discussions encouraged mentees to embrace resilience, develop a growth mindset, and remain focused on their long-term goals.
MCM’s commitment to holistic development extends beyond leadership into global awareness. A session led by Maria Diemer, Executive Director of Global Affairs, introduced students to study abroad opportunities, sparking interest in experiences across the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. These conversations encouraged students to see themselves not only as campus leaders but as global citizens.

The semester concluded with “Bowl & Bond,” an off-campus event that brought students together in a relaxed, community-focused setting. While simple in design, moments like these reinforce the relationships and sense of belonging that are critical to student persistence.

Programs like MCM exemplify the impact of ACI’s Peer Mentoring initiative: creating spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.  Through Dr. Walker’s vision and the continued dedication of program leaders, MCM remains a model for how mentorship can build confidence, strengthen community, and prepare students to lead, on campus and beyond.

A Meaningful Legacy in Trinity Christian College

As the 2026 academic year comes to an end, ACI pauses to honor Trinity Christian College (TCC), a valued member institution whose journey and whose campus are closing. This moment marks not simply the conclusion of a longtime membership affiliation but the closing chapter of a college whose legacy has been shaped by faith, service, academic dedication, and a deeply connected community.

Throughout its time as an ACI member school, TCC exemplified thoughtful engagement and collaboration. Even amid extraordinary challenges, its participation reflected a clear commitment to students and to the responsibilities inherent in higher education. Staff conversations were always grounded in care, transparency, and a shared understanding that institutions are ultimately about the people they serve.

Article Image
Their sense of community has been expressed most powerfully by students themselves. As the announcement of the college’s closure was shared late last year, students spoke openly about the loss of a place that felt like home. Trinity’s impact is reflected not only in the lives it touched but also in its measurable achievements.  Even in excellence, challenges are found.

“We extend our deepest respect and heartfelt thanks to President Jeanine Mozie, the faculty, staff, and many leaders who served this institution and contributed so meaningfully to the ACI community over the years.  The school’s legacy will carry forward in the hearts of every alumnus; we acknowledge not only what has concluded, but also what has been bestowed,” reflected ACI President April Arnold.
