Welcome
from the SIH Foundation Board Chair
This is our inaugural edition of the SIH Foundation Newsletter. I’m so happy to connect with you. In each edition, we will focus on the patients and programs that have benefited from your gifts as well as highlight the dedicated individuals and organizations who have made these deeds possible.
On behalf of myself and the other members of the SIH Foundation Board of Trustees, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your commitment to SIH and the SIH Foundation. Many of you are long-time donors and volunteers, while others of you have recently joined our team or are just learning about the positive impact we have in Southern Illinois. To all, we say Thank You! As the saying goes, “It takes a village,” and we are pleased to have you as part of our community.
Your gift (of time, talent, or treasure), no matter how large or small, makes a significant difference in people’s lives where we live, work, and raise our families. Access to healthcare is one of the most significant factors determining the quality of life in our current times. We are blessed in Southern Illinois to have excellent healthcare close to home. Please remember though, this does not happen in a vacuum. It takes the dedication of many talented and hardworking individuals to make this a reality and you are an integral part of this process.
We appreciate your input as we move forward to grow and strengthen the SIH Foundation and our community. If you have any ideas or suggestions to share, please send them to jill.gobert@sih.net.
All my best to you!

SIH Foundation is Establishing September as
Coach Kill Fund Month
The Coach Kill Fund was created as a result of former SIU Coach Jerry Kill’s personal experience with cancer. He and his wife Rebecca partnered with the SIH Foundation to create the Fund with the purpose of providing financial assistance to patients seeking treatment for cancer in the southern 16 counties of Illinois. Unfortunately, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the SIH seven-county service area. The incidence rates in Southern Illinois are consistently higher than Illinois as a whole. Please help us to help your family, friends, and community members who are going through cancer treatment and recovery.
There are several ways you can support the Coach Kill Fund:
- Donate online at www.coachkillfund.com.
- Shop Huck's during September and donate at the register.
- Visit Murdale Ace Hardware and enter to win a STIHL® MS 250 chainsaw (donations will be accepted in the store).
- Share your message of encouragement to cancer patients on social media using #coachkillfund.

SIH Covid-19 Relief Fund Provides Support to Social Service Agencies and Front-line Healthcare Workers Unemployment, poverty, food insecurity, access to care issues, transportation, and financial barriers are social determinants of health that adversely affect people in our region. Of significant note is poverty. According to the most recent SIH Community Health Needs Assessment, between 14.4-23.4% of our population was living at or below the poverty line.
The arrival of COVID-19 exacerbated the current healthcare needs in our region. This virus has put additional strains on our dedicated healthcare workers and our various social service agencies, which are the first line to help our community’s most vulnerable populations.
Due to this unprecedented situation and our unique partnership with regional social services agencies, SIH created the SIH COVID-19 Relief Fund. Through this new fund, SIH was able to distribute over $51,000 in support of SIH employees and local social service agencies serving those most impacted by the pandemic.
We thank all who helped us lessen the burden on those impacted the hardest during this time. If you are interested in supporting our continuing efforts, please visit sih.net/covid19-response or call 618-457-5200 x67843.

Special Events Updates
Slice of Life Golf-Less Fundraising Campaign
The 27th Annual Slice of
Life Golf Tournament was not played this year due to the ongoing efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Instead, SIH hosted the Slice of Life Golf-Less Fundraising Campaign in early August.
For nearly 30 years, our generous sponsors have played to support healthcare needs in Southern Illinois. Even though they couldn’t play this year, their donations were still critical in providing financial assistance to those in need through the Foundation’s Patient & Community Support Funds.
We extend a big Thank You to our sponsors:

Making Charitable Gifts Today
In some cases, you may find that retirement plans can be an excellent source from which to make charitable gifts today.
Consider the special opportunity for IRA giving
If you have a traditional IRA and are age 70½ or older, you may consider making a direct distribution to eligible charities. You can make one or more gifts in this way up to a total of $100,000 per year. Such gifts are not considered part of your taxable income and can count towards your required minimum distribution for the year. This can be an excellent tax-free way to make charitable gifts whether or not you itemize your deductions. Other tax savings may also result from giving in this way.
If you have a Roth IRA, it may be preferable to take a tax-free withdrawal and use the funds to make tax-deductible gifts.
Please consult your financial advisor or accountant for additional information. |

Why We Do It
Jill Gobert, SIH Foundation Director
We often receive notes of thanks from patients. These are a few that inspire us to do the work we do.
"I had the very best nurses. Very kind, very concerned, I loved them all!"
"You have the best staff. You should be proud."
"I appreciate staff treating me as a person with sense and not a little old lady!"
"The hospitalist & cardiologist were first rate."
