A Note from Chaplain Anne Grizzle 

 

Boys Home students and staff arrived by canoe and kayak for worship on Sunday, September 3 at the park in Glasgow, Virginia. The Sunday service was the culmination of a weekend of fun hosted by St. John's Episcopal Church in Glasgow with assistance from Christ Church in Buena Vista. 

 

Boys Home chaplain, the Rev. Anne Grizzle, was celebrant and preacher while Andy and Conner Wolfe provided music. 

 

The weekend began on Friday evening as the Van Osten family hosted a campout for the Boys Home students at their farm. Saturday was spent canoeing and kayaking the river and luckily getting out just before a storm hit! Though Saturday dinner was moved inside to the St. John's Church, the campout and fireside went on as originally planned. Sunday morning consisted of a delicious breakfast and more river fun before arriving for the Sunday service followed by another fantastic meal. 

 

Many thanks to the members of St. John's and Christ Church for a fabulous and welcoming weekend full of fun and celebration!

 

 

 

 

 

Upcoming Trail Ride and Poker Run at Boys Home!

 

 

 

Join us for Boys Home of Virginia's inaugural weekend trail ride and poker run! The weekend will take place on our beautiful 1000+ acre campus, and will feature creek-side camping, self-guided trail rides on Lick Mountain, a poker run, and live music by the campfire, featuring Garnet Ridge Ramblers.

 

Proceeds will go toward the Boys Home Sturdy Stirrups equine program, where boys learn respect, responsibility, and honesty through caring for and interacting with horses. 

 

The trail ride and poker run will take place on the weekend of October 13-14, 2018 and is $75 per rider. Registration will start at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the poker run at 10:00 a.m. All participants are asked to check out no later than 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The event will provide snacks, a boxed lunch, dinner and music by the campfire on Saturday, and a continental breakfast on Sunday. Overnight accomomodations include primitive creek-side camping, with restrooms and showers available in the gym.

 

*Please note, this is a challenging ride, and horses should have horseshoes. An up-to-date Coggins is required for all horses.

2018 P. Buckley Moss Print Raffle

 

For the 27th year, P. Buckley Moss has donated a print for Boys Home of Virginia to raffle. This year's print is titled Spring At The Smithfield Plantation #79 and is valued at over $200 framed. 

 

Smithfield is a plantation outside Blacksburg, Virginia, built from 1772 to 1774 as a home by Col. William Preston. It was the birthplace of two Virginia governors: James Patton Preston and John B. Floyd. The house remained a family home until 1959 when the home was donated to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. 

 

James Patton Preston, Virginia Governor, inherited the plantation from his mother. It was also the birthplace and home of his son, William Ballard Preston, who worked with Abraham Lincoln in the 1840s in Congress as part of a group of legislators known as "The Young Indians" and later, reluctantly, authored Virginia's Articles of Secession in 1861. Descendants of William and Susanna Preston included four Virginia governors - James Patton Preston, John Floyd, James McDowell, and John Buchanan Floyd - and numerous other legislators. In addition, descendants were instrumental in the founding and growth of several universities, including Virginia Tech, VMI, and the University of South Carolina.

 

The print was framed by Loving Frame & Art located in Covington. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 10 for $45. Boys Home will draw a winner on October 31, 2018. Wear your favorite Halloween costume and join the fun! Boys Home of Virginia is hosting the Howl-O-ween Hustle 5K and Kids Fun Run! This outdoor event is focused on bringing runners, families, and pets together for some fall-themed fun! Attendees can participate in a 5K walk/run, a 1K fun run, costume contests, face painting, games, and more. Come enjoy the beautiful fall scenery of the Alleghany Highlands! 

 

Race Day Schedule:

This event will be chip timed, USATF sanctioned and certified. Top 3 finishers in each catergory will receive a collectible pint glass! (Top 3 male and female overall, top 3 male and female by age groups [14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75+])

 

All children (14 and under) participating in the Kids Fun Run will receive a participation medal. All registrants receive a race T-shirt.

 

Registration fees are $30/individual or $50/family. Pet charge is $5/pet; pets will receive a race bandana.
