June 2026 Newsletter

At Bow Valley Palliative, our mission is to provide compassionate, individualized palliative care and grief support to individuals and families throughout the Bow Valley.
A note from our CEO:

I hope this newsletter reaches you safe and dry!

The “perfect storm” of rain and snow melt was a powerful reminder of 2013, a year that holds difficult memories for many of us of crisis, loss, and uncertainty. Experiencing triggers of the past like this can bring with it all manner of emotions and reactions. The same is true with the grief surrounding a life-changing diagnosis or the loss of a loved one. It can be the smallest thing, a scent or song, a place, or a similar situation. Experiencing it days, months, or years later. Our team is here to support our Bow Valley community not just at the time of loss but whenever it is needed.

You can contact us directly, no need for a referral, by calling us on our main line at 403 707 7111 or through our website here: https://www.bvpal.ca/programs#support

At the end of May, we were very sad to receive news of the loss of Don Pestell. Don was a strong supporter for us and our work in the Bow Valley, supporting us in the early years of our evolution and committing a significant donation to our building when it was still a dream. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Hanna, his wife, and all of his family, and not to mention his dog Walter who was forever by his side. Don was a generous philanthropist to so many charities in the Bow Valley, the place he called home. We are honoured that our Centre will be dedicated in the Pestell name a wonderful legacy to a generous man.

The Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care
A look at the current work happening for access to the Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care
This month marks an exciting chapter as we have received approval for the Development Permit for our new centre! A notice of decision will be posted shortly, and additional information will be available on our website here: https://www.bvpal.ca/centre.

This milestone would not have been possible without the generosity and unwavering support of our donors, volunteers, partners, and community members. We are deeply grateful for the dedication that has brought us to this point, and this fall we look forward to building on that momentum through the next phase of our capital campaign.

As we move forward with the new building, we are committed to being good neighbours and continuing to serve our community with care and respect. We are working closely with the Town of Canmore to identify routes for construction access that will have less impact on the community.

Later this month, volunteers and staff will be connecting with residents in the area and introducing themselves and will share information about our new building.

Your monthly gift ensures:
  • People are supported from diagnosis through grief and bereavement
  • Families and caregivers have guidance when they need it most
  • No one in the Bow Valley faces this journey alone
  • This is more than giving. It’s about helping people live fully, no matter what they’re facing.
With your support, more families can experience that same connection, care, and dignity.

This is an important year for BVP as we break ground on our new centre, The Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care. The centre, which will be built on land generously donated by the McCaffery family, will be a centralized hub for high-quality, holistic care, serving individuals and families in the Bow Valley.

While proceeds from the tournament will continue to support Bow Valley Palliative’s programs and services, this year’s event will also help advance our campaign for our new centre and raise awareness for the growing need for palliative care in our community.

The 2025 National Institute of Ageing in Canada Survey - Perspectives on Growing Older in Canada

Check out this annual survey, led by the National Institute of Aging (NIA), which examines 10 indicators of ageing well in Canada, including social wellbeing, financial security, health and independence and perspectives on ageing for Canadians across the country. The findings serve as a call to action for policymakers, organizations, and stakeholders to prioritize evidence-based strategies.
