"The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament proclaims works of his hands." Psalm 19:2
Today, we are invited to join Christians around the world in marking Creation Day, also known as the Feast of Creation or the World Day of Prayer for Creation.
This celebration in our modern era began with the Ecumenical Patriarch Demetrios I in 1989, encouraging others to join the Orthodox Church in an ancient (fifth-century) liturgical tradition to honor God as Creator, to commemorate the mystery of Creation in Christ, and to inspire Christians to care for the created world.
It’s now spearheaded by the World Council of Churches, the ecumenical body that includes Orthodox and Protestant churches. In 2015, Pope Francis added the date to the Catholic calendar, writing that “The celebration of this Day, on the same date as the Orthodox Church, will be a valuable opportunity to bear witness to our growing communion with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. We live at a time when all Christians are faced with the same decisive challenges, to which we must respond together, in order to be more credible and effective. It is my hope that this Day will in some way also involve other churches and ecclesial communities and be celebrated in union with similar initiatives of the World Council of Churches.”
The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is much bigger than Earth Day. It is deeper and broader: God the Creator is at the center of the Feast of Creation.
In his message for Creation Day 2025, Pope Leo XIV, who has made care for creation a priority of his pontificate, said that “for believers, environmental justice is also a duty born of faith, since the universe reflects the face of Jesus Christ, in whom all things were created and redeemed.”
This video offers a brief introduction and invitation to Creation Day. Feel free to share it, and to join with all Christians in pondering the magnificent mystery of Earth and Heaven!
