Wetlands are such an important element in maintaining a healthy planet. Wetlands not only help to purify and clean water, but they replenish groundwater and act as a natural sponge in protection from flooding and drought. Also, wildlife rely on wetlands for habitat and people use wetlands for recreation and subsistence.
Often times, wetlands are considered wastelands and are drained, filled in and developed on. It is estimated that 64% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since 1900.
To promote awareness and understanding of the importance of wetlands worldwide, Ramsar created World Wetlands Day to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, held in the city of Ramsar in Iran. Their goal is to increase the public awareness about the importance and values of wetlands.
The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is a designated Ramsar site, one of 37 sites in Canada. With 17,000 acres of wetland and riparian habitat, the area plays a significant role for wildlife, humans and environmental health. We ask you to join us today in celebrating this wetland and wetlands across the world.
