 | February 2026 Newsletter At Bow Valley Palliative, our mission is to provide compassionate, individualized palliative care and grief support to individuals and families throughout the Bow Valley. |
A note from our CEO:
It’s hard to believe that we are already one month into the New Year. With these unseasonably warm temperatures and the evenings already getting a little lighter, we might like to think that Spring is around the corner, but of course we know differently. We just make the most of it! A life-changing illness is a little like the seasons, medical knowledge tells us how an illness will evolve over time. Each person is different, and their illness will progress at different speeds and in ways unique to them. That is why it is important to understand the diagnosis and what it will mean, focusing on what is of value to you and your family, making the most of the time ahead. While Bow Valley Palliative is here to support our community through end of life and grief, our goal is to support anyone who receives a life-changing diagnosis from that point forward. We can help navigate resources, act as a listening ear to you and your family, and support you in doing and achieving what’s important to you. Accessing our support is simple, either email us at info@bvpal.ca or by calling on 403-707-7111.
| | The Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care | | The parcel of land, donated by the McCaffery family, where the Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care will be built in Canmore. | The New Year has brought with it renewed energy to the project. The tendering process for construction has now closed and CANA, our construction partners, are compiling a report to present to the Bow Valley Palliative Board of Directors. The Development Permit approval is anticipated shortly and with it the Building Permit is ready to be submitted to the town of Canmore.
The land is currently being prepped to start construction and cleared to comply with FireSmart requirements. In January, Bow Valley Palliative team members toured the Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks, that recently expanded their building from 8 to 16 beds. By touring the newly renovated hospice, we can gain important knowledge on opening and operating a space like this, identifying what we need to include (and avoid) in our building.
We are very appreciative of the team at Foothills Country Hospice for granting us the time to learn from their recent development experience. They, together with other hospices across Alberta have been extremely helpful to us on our journey, ensuring that our Centre will be a leader in palliative and hospice care.
| | | Hospice Program Coordinator
| | Bill Harder will shift his focus to developing Bow Valley Palliative’s vision for future programming in our new building as Hospice Program Coordinator.
He will continue to support our new Program Manager, Avery Levesque, as needed and will collaborate with Avery on future community programming planning as well.
Thank you, Bill for all your hard work and continued dedication to program development for Bow Valley Palliative!
