 | May 2026 Newsletter At Bow Valley Palliative, our mission is to provide compassionate, individualized palliative care and grief support to individuals and families throughout the Bow Valley. |
A note from our CEO:
April has been a busy month for all of us at Bow Valley Palliative, and May is looking to be just as exciting! As well as flipping pancakes at the Town of Canmore’s volunteer appreciation event on Sunday, April 19, we also celebrated our own BVP volunteers at our Volunteer Appreciation event on April 21. It's always so lovely to see so many of our volunteers, those that have been with us since we started 10 years ago, as well as those that have just joined our team. It was a beautiful warm day, and we really appreciated everyone who came along, engaging in great conversation and enjoying wonderful food. On April 23 we welcomed people from Banff and surrounding areas to our Open House. As well as the opportunity to find out more about the programs and services we currently offer, and the new Centre that we are planning to build in the Bow Valley, we also had the privilege of hearing from Kristin Lenarduzzi, Manager for Acute Care and Emergency Departments at Banff Mineral Springs Hospital about the urgent need for a respite, palliative care, and hospice in the Bow Valley. We also were privileged to hear from Reg Bunyan who spoke of his journey with his late wife, Barb, navigating her dementia diagnosis, focusing on living well and making memories and the grief experienced throughout. Thank you for sharing your very personal experience. Next week is National Hospice and Palliative Care Week. To recognize the importance of this week, we will be hosting a short film “Live The Life You Please” followed by a panel and audience discussion. The film focuses on different real-life situations of people who have faced life-changing diagnoses, their partners, caregivers, and family. Each situation is slightly different, but all speak to the importance of conversation and living the best that you can.
Come along and join us on May 4th from 5:30-7:30pm in the Screening Room at Origin at Spring Creek. No RSVP required!

Progress is happening daily, with water and utilities, being prepared for each of the lots including our Centre. This is a significant benefit for us and once again, it is being provided through the generosity of the McCaffrey's. Work has also begun preparing the land where the Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care will be built. This is a very exciting development for us at Bow Valley Palliative and for our donors and supporters.
Our recent Open House in Banff provided us with another great opportunity to talk about the space, the programs and services that we plan to extend to and offer for the first time in the new Centre. It was great to hear the support of our colleagues at Banff Mineral Springs Hospital for our vision and the urgent need for this in our community.

| | | May is National Caregiver Awareness Month! National Caregiver Awareness Month is a reminder that behind many health journeys is someone quietly supporting and coordinating care. These efforts are often unseen by others, yet they shape comfort, dignity, and stability for the person receiving care. Caregiving can be both rewarding and heavy, filled with moments of connection and moments of exhaustion. Recognizing this reality helps ensure unpaid family and friend caregivers feel valued not just for what they do, but for the role they hold in the lives of others. At Bow Valley Palliative we choose to celebrate caregiving. Thank you caregivers! | | | | | | Follow us on social media for more news and exciting updates! | | |
