A new season is upon us at the Wildlife Centre!  Lots of great events and programs are planned for the season, so check out details below!

Upcoming Programs and Events at Wildlife Centre
 
We opened the doors on May 9th this season.  We will be open Monday to Saturday in May and June (and then seven days a week in July and August).
 
We will be Shell-e-brating Turtles on Friday May 29th and Saturday May 30th.  In partnership with the Cental Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee, VAST Resource Solutions and the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program - Columbia Region, we will be hosting a community weed pull, presentation by researchers and fun activities, crafts and games for the whole family to enjoy.  Find out more here.
 
The Kootenay Community Bat Project is offering a Bat Count Workshop at the Wildlife Interpretation Centre on Thursday June 4th from 8:30-10:30 pm.  See a local bat colony and become trained as a Citizen Scientist.  Come and learn more about bat ecology and conservation and how to conduct an Annual Bat Count to monitor bat populations.  The event is free.  For more details, go here.

Turtles Are Crossing the Road!!
 
Turtles will be crossing roads in May and June to lay their eggs in gravelly south facing slopes.  Please be aware and cautious when driving near wetland areas during this nesting period.
 
Roads in the Creston area where turtles are frequently seen crossing include West Creston Rd, sections of Highway 3 and Highway 21 (among others!).
 
The CVWMA is working with VAST Ecological Solutions in Cranbrook to monitor and study the western painted turtle at the Wildlife Area.  Nesting habitat is being created on the wetland side of West Creston Rd to encourage the turtles to lay their eggs here instead of crossing the road (gravel areas are created and fenced in on the road side).
 
Join researchers on Friday May 29th at the Wildlife Interpretation Centre from 7-8 pm for a free presentation highlighting their research efforts at the CVWMA.  For more information, please go here.
 
 
Wildlife Centre Hours
 
We are open in May and June from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 4pm.
 
Guided canoe tours are avaialble when open at 9:30, 10:30, 1 and 2.  Call us to book at (250) 402 6908 to ensure there is space available!

 
Duck Lake Cross Dyke is Now OPEN to Vehicle Traffic
 
The gate at the southeast end of the cross dyke at Duck Lake is now open, allowing vehicle traffic on the dyke.  The dyke surface is now dry enough to allow for vehicle traffic without causing unnecessary damage to the dyke itself.  Thank you!
